From My Heart...

The Color of Love…
Ever think about what color love might be? We often think of Blue, as in “I’m so blue without you…” a song made popular by LeAnne Rimes years ago. Or maybe you think of love being other than a color, but an attribute, such as gentleness, kindness, motherly or fatherly love, faithfulness, to one degree or another. I think of the sweet mother who is up in the night with a sick child, or the diligent father working long hours to provide for his family. A picture of a little boy playing happily in the grass with his puppy ~ love. It warms our hearts.
Or maybe we think of Yellow, as in the song sung by Willie Nelson, “You Are My Sunshine ~ you make me happy when skies are gray”…the act of lifting one’s spirits when they are sad or feeling down. I reflect on the color Purple, a regal and rich color, and somehow it reminds me of the woman of Proverbs 31, possessing strength and dignity, and wisdom, even when her day is hard.
Another song, one made popular by Billy Ocean, has these words: “Tell me what is the color of love? What do you see? Is it warm, is it tender when you think of me? I see the color of love when I''m thinking of you…The colors of the rainbow turn gray whenever you''re so far away…”
But ultimately, there really is a color for Love ~ it’s Red. I am reminded of that when I recall the words to a song our choir sang years ago at Christmas: “In letters of crimson, God wrote His love on the hillside so long, long ago; For you and for me Jesus died, and love''s greatest story was told…I love you, I love you ~ That''s what Calvary said; I love you, I love you, I love you, Written in Red.”

This is the truest form of Love there is. One that is everlasting and pure. We won’t ever find that kind of Love in another human being ~ only Jesus. Unfailing, priceless, enduring, healing. His Love is compassionate, comforting, and delightful. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, “Love is patient, love is kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud. It is not rude, not self-seeking, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres. Love never fails.” This kind of love only comes from God, through Jesus, His Son who paid the price we never could.
I am reminded of this beautiful Love when I hear a recent new song on the radio, and the words ring through my heart and mind all day long:
“At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life, I''m in awe of You, I''m in awe of You; Where Your love ran Red and my sin washed white, I owe all to You, I owe all to You ~ Jesus.” (Chris Tomlin)
So, you may see love in many colors ~ the rainbow is God’s promise to us, the blue sky and sunshine, green of the foliage, and flora, much of what we cannot even name, a reminder of His Creation, of which we are a part. And in our sin, that loving Creator sent His Son to show us the true color of Love.
