A High That Lasts
By Rita Jennas Church of the Open Door
To become a plant... to develop into a tree, and subsequently produce
fruit, a seed must get out and above the earth, and push forward.
Likewise, to grow... to develop, and to become productive, we, too, as
children to the Most High God must through prayer and meditation, seek
to rise above the various tests and challenges of life... pressing
forward into that “high” place and calling in God, as Paul the Apostle
did. “ I press...” he said. (Philippians 4:13)
In this world today, “GETTING HIGH” may seem to mean something
different. But using artificial means to forcefully and instantly
experience a “HIGH”, can only result in self destruction. The ONLY
LASTING HIGH is found in a personal relationship with God – the “MOST
HIGH”. Only then is it OK to “Get High”. Only then will the soul be
fully satisfied.
In our quest to find this lasting high, listed below are three steps
that can help us:
Step One: The dictionary says that “a thought is the power to
imagine... the action or process of thinking; it is a reasoning
power.” Someone else said: “Thoughts are the stuff that things are
made of... and thoughts are more than things.” But the Christian Bible
says that as we “THINK” in our heart, so are we. (Proverbs 23:7) We
become our thoughts. Therefore, as we deliberately choose to think
only positive, uplifting and godly thoughts, it will ignite the
process to start us on our journey to that “HIGH” place in God our
Father, Who is the “MOST HIGH” (Genesis 14:20,22)
Step Two: Meditation is a powerful tool that can be used for silent
communion with God; for it quiets the soul and helps us to maintain
the right focus. It helps direct our thoughts to new ideas, new
strengths, deeper encouragement and faith, that can be birthed only in
this atmosphere of peace. It is a form of prayer. In Psalms 19:14
David said: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditations of my
heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, My strength, and my
Redeemer”. So, keep on meditating on God’s Word... affirming His
promises as they pertain to your situation. For when faced with
limitations, adversities and challenges, the human tendency is to seek
out something on which to “get high” . HIGH with worrying and
fretting high in doubts and fears of all kinds. It was because of this
human tendency that David, (The Jewish King) exclaimed: “When my heart
is overwhelmed; Lead me to the Rock that is Higher than I!” (Psalms 61:2)
Step Three: Look up! Keep your thoughts turned upward! The story is
told of two men behind prison bars. One looked DOWN and saw only mud.
The other looked UP and saw a star. To look DOWN may cause you to
blame and condemn yourself or others.... To LOOK down takes you to the
mud of despair that only leads to pity parties (where you are the only
attendant). Looking DOWN is a self destroying habit that encourages a
feeling of hopelessness. But looking UP will bring help from on HIGH.
King David again said:”I will lift up mine eyes to the hills, from
whence comes my help. My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and
earth” (Psalms 121:1-2) The word of God also declares that YOU are the
temple of the living God; and as a believer, He lives in you. (For in
Him(God). We have life, and motion, and existence”. (Acts 17:28)
As we follow the examples of these great and might men of God, we,
will find a permanent satisfying, and “LASTING HIGH”, - A “HIGH” that
won’t wear off. A “HIGH” that will bring fulfillment to our lives; and
cause GOD’S WORD to come alive in our experience. We’ll find the “HIGH
THAT LASTS!” For, “ALL OUR EXPECTATION IS FROM HIM” - (God, the most
High) Psalms 62:5)
